Using Creativity to Strengthen School Culture
At Dya Australia, we believe creativity is more than expression—it’s a powerful tool for strengthening team culture, enhancing wellbeing, and building authentic connections. This belief came to life in a recent values-based team-building session we facilitated for the staff at Hester Hornbrook Academy, a Melbourne-based education provider.
The school approached us with a clear goal: to bring their core values—Engage, Equip, Empower, and Extend—into focus in a way that felt human, shared, and lasting.

A Visual Approach to Values
Rather than a typical team workshop, we co-designed a collaborative sketching session rooted in Dya’s creative thinking model. The goal? To move beyond discussion and into hands-on, reflective engagement.
Guided by our artist-facilitators, participants explored how each value shows up in their daily work. They used sketching as a way to turn abstract ideas into tangible visual symbols—representing their personal and collective experiences of these values.
Â
Key Outcomes of the Workshop
1. Core Values Reinforced Through Art
Transforming values into visuals allowed staff to internalise their meaning more deeply. Drawing invited storytelling and personal insight, helping these principles resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels.
2. Staff Wellbeing Supported
The act of creating together brought calm, laughter, and mindfulness. Especially in high-pressure school environments, this kind of reflective space becomes a valuable form of self-care.
3. Team Cohesion Strengthened
Through shared creative tasks, staff saw new sides of one another. This promoted empathy, understanding, and a stronger sense of unity—essential in values-led teams.
4. A Shared Artefact Created
The completed artwork now hangs in the school’s workspace. More than decoration, it’s a daily reminder of the team’s shared values, insights, and commitment to each other.

Why It Worked: A Perfect Fit for Purpose-Led Teams
Hester Hornbrook Academy is a values-driven organisation, and this workshop reflected that. It wasn’t just about creativity—it was about alignment, trust, and intentional culture-building.
This is what makes creative team buildings so impactful. When staff engage in a process that’s both reflective and expressive, it builds more than skills, it nurtures connection and purpose.
Â
Dya’s Approach: Creativity with Intention
At Dya, we design workshops that combine art, reflection, and emotional safety. We specialise in working with educators, non-profits, and values-led organisations who want to bring their mission to life in meaningful ways.
Whether you’re planning a staff development day, re-aligning culture, or simply looking to energise your team, our art-based team-building sessions are tailored to support your goals.

When Creativity Meets Values, Change Follows
This collaboration between Dya Australia and Hester Hornbrook Academy demonstrates how art can do more than inspire—it can solidify culture, strengthen wellbeing, and reconnect teams to their purpose.
Through a single, thoughtfully facilitated sketching session, staff were reminded not just of what they do—but why they do it.
