A Shared City Through Silhouette: Creative Incursion with Hume Grammar

How does participating in art empower students?

A City, A Classroom, A Canvas

When Hume Grammar invited us to collaborate as part of their Year 9 City Experience program, they weren’t just looking for an art activity; they were seeking a way to bring learning to life. The goal of the program was to encourage students to explore Melbourne through teamwork, curiosity, independence, and intercultural understanding.

Dya was asked to adapt our “My View” creative workshop into a unique incursion for schools that could be delivered onsite. What emerged was a fun fusion of art and perspective.

My View, Our City: An Educational Incursion with Purpose

Each student began by creating a silhouette artwork reflecting their personal perspective of life in Melbourne. Then, working in groups of 4–6, they designed a collective background, merging individual ideas into one shared vision. The final pieces captured the essence of their City Experience themes: health, wellbeing, and human connection.

This incursion became more than a hands-on art class. It invited students to explore civic identity, visual storytelling, and group collaboration. Through creative expression, students interpreted their research into topics like sport, festivals, community services, and food, and wove those insights into meaningful visuals.

What Made This School Incursion Stand Out?

Teachers described the workshop as a clear success, highlighting how it supported social learning, individual expression, and collaborative thinking. The feedback focused on:

  • Deep engagement with the City Experience inquiry question: How do Melburnians maintain their health, wellbeing, and connections with others?
  • Stronger teamwork and respect among peers through shared creation.
  • Artworks that spoke volumes, visually representing both unique student voices and collective meaning.

This program is an ideal model for schools looking for incursion ideas that align with values, community, and the curriculum.

Why Creative Incursions Matter

This project is one example of how incursions in Melbourne can go beyond the classroom and into students’ real-world thinking. It offered:

  • Perspective-building through individual and group design
  • Inquiry-based learning grounded in the local community
  • A creative platform to foster curiosity, emotional intelligence, and shared respect

Whether you’re seeking hands-on incursions for primary schools or rich creative workshops for secondary students, bringing art into the school environment offers more than skill; it cultivates understanding.
